More than a ManAcrylic on canvas, 2014
What is a man? The definition of a true man has long been debated through the ages and across an array of different genres that surround the human existence. Primarily, males have been stereotyped as the providers drawing its origins from the known role men engaged in through earliest signs of colonization or civilization. However, the evolution of societies and civilizations as a whole has seen the role of men progress and diversify based societal values, needs and willingness to change. Qualities that have arisen throughout history have seen this role fluctuate in power but the constant that has remained is that a stereotype had been established as the bench mark by which males strived to achieve. In more recent times men have seen the greatest diversification in what qualities can be associated and identified as true male characteristics than previously have been attributed to their gender role. This varies from the classical sporting stereotype to the metrosexual male emerging through contemporary culture. |
More than Man illustrates the evolution of male qualities, behaviours and attitudes in response to modern values. The once pinnacle of the manhood stereotype dismantled and reborn into a new generation of man.
